Should Teachers Take Drawing Classes?

I am a horrible artist and every time I attempt to draw something on the board, my students laugh at me (or should I say laugh "with" me). I will never forget how this one time I drew a dog and it looked like a dinosaur! Today, I was teaching articles and attempted to draw a unicorn, but as usual it looked ridiculous (like a monster). I personally think my horrible drawing skills are beneficial to my students because a)they make them laugh b) they sometimes feel better about themselves because they can draw better, and c) they never forget the word because reason "a" and reason "b" really stimulate their brains! I mean honestly, I don't want to improve my drawing skills since it's such a good attention getter. What do you think? Should I take drawing classes? This is a serious question... :)

  1. I like that phrase "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Something else to consider, taking drawing classes might not necessarily help you with your drawing. Shouldn't be a big deal though, if it's funny and gets the idea across, that's more than enough.

  2. If not knowing how to draw gets a laugh out of your students then i think it is a good thing. Laughter is the key to happiness. =)

  3. I like it when teachers try to draw and create something else. I think taking drawing classes is a waste of time unless you are a science teacher, then drawing things are important.

  4. No, I don't think so. There are other ways to handle the situation. Get pictures, get an overhead doc camera...have a student draw the picture! That's the best. Actually, I like having the students laugh. It lightens up the mood of the classroom...then someone else can show off their skills. Cheers!

  5. I am a horrible artist too, but as you said sometimes it can be beneficial.
